To SPAM or not to SPAM? PDF Print E-mail

I received a suspicious email yesterday. It had all the earmarks of spyware / malware / spam: cryptic subject ("Electrician in your area"), no message text, Microsoft Word document attached, and a cute picture of a cartoon pig. Normally I delete these immediately. But I noticed the distribution was only to a few email addresses, all of which I recognized as neighbors.

So I opened it...carefully. The email attachment was a legitimate, though amateurish promotion for a local small  business. I assume the author, whose name I did not recognize, is someone I know or have had contact with. So, foolishly being the helpful person I am, I tried to explain to them the multiple mistakes they made that potentially did more to damage the business they were promoting:

Out of Disk Space PDF Print E-mail

I tend to save everything. And as a result, I tend to fill up disk drives. Disk drives are like garages: it's where stuff tends to settle. And like a garage, they need to be cleaned out once in a while. But unlike a garage you can easily and inexpensively expand your storage. There are 4 ways to increase your available disk space: eliminate unnecessary programs, remove old or unneeded files, add a second disk drive, or upgrade to a larger disk drive.

Online Fraud Protection PDF Print E-mail

Using the Internet for online transactions can be risky. The tips below will help keep your information and money safe from theft:

  • Don't click pop-ups.
  • Don't download files from websites you don't trust
  • When making online transactions make sure the web site address begins with https. This indicates that your transactio is encrypted. Verify that the key or padlock icon appears on your browser window (usually in the bottom status bar)
  • Don't visit other sites while conducting financial transactions online
  • Always close your browser after conducting financial transactions online
  • Don't open attachments or click links in suscpicious email
  • Never send personal or sensitive information in an email
  • Choose strong passwords and change them on a regular basis
  • Don't use the same passwords for other websites that you use for financial sites
  • Back up your important files at least once a month

Passwords

What is a "strong password"?  Strong passwords should meet all of the following criteria:

  • At least 8 characters in length
  • Mixture of upper and lower case, digits, and special characters
  • Not based on a word or phrase
  • Change them regularly (every 30-90 days)

Example:

#Lo7b%sT - strong password, not based on a word, uses all of the recommended characters

You can write down your passwords safely, but store them separately from your computer and do not put any other information with the password that could be used to determine what the password is for (user ID, web site address, account number, or business name). The key to two-factor authentication is something you know (user ID) and something you have (password). Storing the two items together is extremely dangerous. Storing them separately puts another obstacle between a hacker and your account.

SPYWARE ALERT: Deus Cleaner PDF Print E-mail

We're seeing some users infected by a piece of spyware purporting to be a cleanup utility called Deus Cleaner. Deus Cleaner displays dire (and exaggerated) warnings about security problems on the infected computer in an attempt to get the user to purchase the full version. DO NOT download, install, or especially purchase Deus Cleaner. Remove it IMMEDIATELY if it has managed to find its way onto your computer.

Removal requires manually deleting several registry entries and files and unregistering DLLs. If you are not comfortable with the inner workings of Windows please contact us. We can remove it while doing a complete checkup of your computer.
